"...the past informing the present and creatively shaping the future..."
"The reality of the building does not consist of roof and walls, but in the space within to be lived."
-- Lao Tse
Sacred Spaces is where architecture and spirituality intersect.
Humans have always used architecture to organize their space — for work, for domestic use, for worship — using building materials to both enclose and protect and to create mood and beauty. Architecture has also been used to separate sacred spaces from common ground.
This series of documentaries examines how across time and culture and geographic distance humans have defined the spaces they consider holy, using architectural concepts to build the greatest cathedrals, the humblest shrine, and the gaudiest of pleasure domes. The question "What makes a space sacred?" is at the core of every program. Each episode will compare a sacred architectural form with a similar form being created today. Sacred Spaces will examine buildings with clear religious significance, such as churches, temples, and mosques, but will also explore how secular society with its focus on commerce and entertainment attempts to create its own distinct sacred spaces.
Sacred Spaces will serve as a lens to view cultures past and present.
